Physician, neuroscientist, pharmacologist and university professor who served as President of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences between 2002 and 2008. He was a Riker Fellow at the Department of Pharmacology of the University of Oxford. He was visiting professor at the universities of Mainz and Parma. He also taught at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine of Yeshiva University. He was inducted to the Academia Europaea in 1992. In 2010, he was elected to the board of the Hungarian Football Association. He is also known as an excellent chess player.
